My Funny Galentine

My best Galentine—always and forever—is my mom. I’m so lucky I landed a good one.

Growing up, I could count on Mom celebrating Valentine’s Day with cards and chocolates and even a little gift for each of us three kids with our breakfast. But I remember it mostly as the day Mom went all-out shift-shaping food into hearts. With Cupid’s aim and a heart-shaped cookie cutter, Mom took on the whole buffet of possibility. Got pancakes? Boom, now it’s hearts. Pizza, but make it hearts. Slice of cheese, slice of apple, slice of toast—that’s a heart sandwich. It was like Mom saved up every bit of her culinary creativity for an all-day celebration of edible heart art.

Of course, this is just one of her many talents. While I know her best as a mother, grandmother, friend, travel partner, listener-of-problems, giver-of-advice, and easy hang—she is so much more. Mom has been in education for forty years and a Head of four independent schools, most recently The Marlborough School in Los Angeles, where we both live (down the street from each other).

Perhaps So, Mom was inevitable, but it’s been lots of fun to co-create a podcast season where Mom and I dedicate discussions to kids, schools, parenting today, and parenting back in the day. We’ve had such a blast pulling it together with podcast producer extraordinaire Sarah Enni, and I’m getting very excited for it to be out in the world.
