Inside Sunshine & Your Book Club

Last week, I threw a book launch party for The Favor at my home. We had a touch of June gloom in Los Angeles this month so I was happy the sun dropped by, as well as new friends from across the street and dear old friends from across the country.

Writing is the best job for people who want to access the world from behind the Wizard of Oz screens of our laptops, and that day I thought a lot about my years in screen time, and all of those drafts buried with their titles: Count On Me, Who Else But Me, The Present, The Gift. While my memory holds the weight of every version of this story, the day itself was wonderfully light and shared. (Except for the burden of too many IG Stories, and I hope you’ve all forgiven me for that.)

I like to think The Favor is a careful path into the bigger conversation about infertility, but it’s also the story of my first big love—New York—as well as the intrigue of vintage, the thrill of new relationships, the deep value of long relationships, and the many unconventional paths to motherhood. As I jump over to the East Coast this week for some live-in-person events (details below), I’m glad I get to continue that conversation—and on that, please check out my virtual book club guide. All you need are 4+ friends, to have bought and read The Favor, and I’m here. Details are all up on my website, so feel free to Calendly me in. You can purchase a copy of The Favor from Bookshop, Barnes & Noble, or on Amazon, iBooks, or your favorite local indie.

Some snaps from last Tuesday.

My dress from Raleigh Vintage is one hundred years old but doesn’t look a day over eighty-three.

The Favor is dedicated to my mom, and I was so thrilled that her book club came!

Sweet E’s provided the customized cookies, and younger guests provided much eating of them.

I'll be making some stops on the East Coast to celebrate The Favor, and I'd love to see you. Here's where I'll be:

  • TONIGHT in Sparta Township, NJ, Sparta Books, 6:30pm

  • Saturday, June 24, in Bethany Beach, DE, Bethany Beach Books, 6pm

  • Tuesday, June 27, in Queens, NY, Astoria Bookshop, 7pm (tickets required)

  • Wednesday, June 28, in Brooklyn, NY, with Jenny Han, Barnes & Noble Atlantic Avenue, 6:30pm (purchase required, reservations recommended)

  • Thursday, June 29, in Mystic, CT, Bank Square Books, 6:30pm

More details on my website. I hope to see you!
